Site

I have built a quicky site for my application(s). Loads more to be done on it, but wanted to get it up there. Check it out at: http://apps.steamshift.com.

After a few people have had problems with the old widget, where the version of the Category Tagging plugin had been updated, thus breaking the widget, and with the debugging help of Nicholas Feasey, now available is a new version. This version has imported the plugin code (Category Tagging Plugin), so I can only claim to have connected all the dots as it were. The upshot of this is that the widget can now operate independently of the plugin; hopefully this will make it easier.

A little while ago I moved my blog from Blojsom to Wordpress - for anyone who might find it useful, here is the php script I used to automate most of that process. I’ll try and post a new, tidier version down the line.

Download my Blojsom to Wordpress Importer.

Just put it in the web folder of your site, fill in the details at the top of the file and visit the page with a web browser. It’s clunky but it worked for me! Usual caveats - no guarantees, or warranty - if anything goes wrong, it’s not my responsibility! NB: it currently requires the PEAR DB library.

Wow. How did that happen?!

I thought that I would do a post, rather belatedly, in honour of my first anniversary as a proper blogger. Hopefully, this will give you a flavour of the kind of things that I tend to post about. Here are links to 12 not entirely random articles from the archives (one from each month from March ‘05 to February ‘06):

I’ve been playing with Google Analytics. In order to get it, you need to sign up and wait for them to invite you. Once it’s installed and running it really is a very good comprehensive stats analysis package, and free to boot.

Interesting tidbits:

  • I get as many visitors from the US as from UK. In fact 75% of all my readers are outside the UK. Cool!
  • There is a definite mac bias (65%)! And Safari has twice the number of users as the nearest rival which is Firefox, with IE trailing in third.
  • 3% of readers are using 800*600 as their screen resolution:- come on guys let’s move into the 21st Century! (no-one seems to be using smaller screens eg mobile devices, which is good ’cause I’d need to do a load of CSS work for them).

Much fun! SteamSHIFT out.

I have just added in Feedburner stuff to my blog; so if you are currently reading this via an RSS feed, get the new feed (linked to on the top right of the page) for added value! Cheers.

I have made the move to Wordpress. It was pretty painless really; I had to write a script to pull my blojsom data into wp and another to forward visitors to the old location to the new one, trying to ensure they end up where they are supposed to.

So all good. It also means that I can switch off the java application server, which has got to lighten the load.

I have also moved 5 other blogs to their new homes.

I’ll clean up my blojsom to wordpress importer code and post here in the next few days.

Ooh and how do you like the new theme? I have adapted Vanilla Mist’s excellent Connections. I’ll probably do my own down the line as I get to know wp a bit better.

I’m currently evaluating using a Wordpress install instead of the current Blojsom that I am using - it has some big advantages for me:

  1. I am a PHP developer by day, so I can figure out how to hack it pretty easily.
  2. I can install it nicely at the URL of my choice - in this case, it will be http://blog.steamshift.com - much nicer than all the blojsom/blog/default/ business - ick!
  3. Templates look to be a piece of cake.
  4. Instant fix / alterations - Blojsom seems to need the appserver restarting in order to get template changes to show up.

Any folk out there got any reasons for / against a move from Blojsom to WordPress?
