Real quick post for really quickly knocked up widget. So I decided to stop using categories as categories and use them as tags; much more straightforward. I’m using the Category Tagging plugin which is really neat and works really well. However, I wanted to use it a widget. So here is my first widget: all it does is grab the cloud from the Category Tagging plugin and display it. It needs all the Category Tagging plugin options connecting to the widget control interface rather than being hard coded; but it works! Here is the CSS I used (I put it at the bottom of the stylesheet)
CSS:
-
#sidebar ul .tagcloud {
-
padding: 0;
-
margin: 0;
-
}
-
-
#sidebar ul .tagcloud li {
-
display: inline;
-
list-style: none;
-
background-image: none;
-
padding: 0;
-
margin: 0;
-
}
-
-
#sidebar ul .tagcloud li a {
-
background-image: none;
-
padding: 0;
-
margin: 0;
-
}

Hi,
I can’t seem to get your widget to display on the presentation/widgets admin page. I have it in the same directory as the other widgets, but it juts doesn’t show up on the list.
Any thoughts?
Regards,
Shane.

Did you activate it in Plug-ins?
May 30th, 2006 at 9:10 pm
I must be doing something really stupid. I installed the category-tagging plugin and activated it.
Then installed your plugin and activated it.
Moved the widged to the sidebar and that’s it.
I go to my page and it says categories but nothing displays? Was there something else I was supposed to do there?
I just know I’m missing something quite silly.

Did you install the Category Tagging plugin as well? This widget requires that plugin to function. At some point, I’ll try to make it independent, but for now, the plugin is required.
Hope this helps.

Yes, the Category Tagging plugin is in there. Perhaps this issue is NOT your widget at all but something else that needs to be done with the Tagging plugin?
I assume that one just activates this plugin and is not required to put anything in a template or other such PHP file?
Sorry to bug you with this but I’m going to have to work backwards in order to determine what I’m doing wrong.
It’s got to be something silly.
Are you able to think of anything else that might be causing the issue.
Appreciate your help.

I seem to remember the tagging plugin being very simple, so it probably is my plugin! Have you filled in all of the parameters required by my widget? Can you send a link so I can take a look?
Cheers.

Hmm? Parameters required by the widget?
I merely put the widget onto the page and used what was in there. Was there something else I was supposed to do?
Anyway I have put the widget back on the sidebar. It’s heading is SteamSHIFT Test.
Thanks.

Well it depends if you have the earlier version of my widget or the later one; the earlier one had no parameters; the later one does. Click to bring up the widget control. My parameters are :
Title: Category Cloud
Min Size: 7
Max Size: 18
Exclude: (nothing)
Minimum No. For Inclusion: 0
Element: <li><a rel="tag" href="%link%" title="%title% (%count%)" style="font-size:%size%pt" rel="nofollow">%title%</a></li>
Kind of feeling in the dark here!

Yeah, I feel completely in the dark as well.
I check the parameters of your widget and that is perfectly ok.
If you go to http://events.uoftbookstore.com there is a SteamSHIFT test on the sidebar. If you view source it’s like it is not there.
Perhaps it is when the plugin is being loaded that is throwing things off?
Regardless, it’s just got to be something minor but silly.

Just an update. I installed a standard Wordpress 2.0.3.
Installed Category Tagging and your plugin and, for some reason, even with the default theme it’s a no go.
If you have any further suggestions it would be greatly appreciated.

Ok, I have it. As of 1.1 of the Category Tagging plugin there is a new parameter called sortby.
The order of how the parameters are passed to the Category Tagging plugin seem to be important?
So then, I hope you don’t mind but I’ve made a 1.1 version of your plugin which I would be more than happy to email to you if you wish.
I believe that I’ve set the correct default to the sortby parameter in the widget options although it didn’t display for me as a default.
However, it works like a charm now.

Sounds like that was the problem. My version worked with the version of the plugin I was using! I’ve mailed you direct.

Hello… I’m trying out your widget, and while I was able to get everything installed, the end product looks utterly bizarre. Under “Category Cloud” in my sidebar, a few of my top categories do appear - in almost microscopic font! (Actually, the only category that was even remotely viewable - and we’re talking something like a 4 point font - was the “Uncategorized” category, which of course has the lion’s share of my posts right now.)
I see in your comment #8 above that you’ve specified minimum and maximum font sizes, so I’m kind of lost on why the output is like this.
Any ideas?
Thanks in advance (she said hopefully…) - V.

[…] After a lot of frustration in trying to implement Zak Greant’s Cat Cloud Plugin v0.2.2 (not, I should specify, through any fault of the developer, but owing to my own technical knowledge limitations and, frankly, patience), I chanced upon another option: SteamSHIFT’s Category Cloud widget. I’m hopeful that I can get this one to work, although right now the output looks pretty funky (e.g. with nearly microscopic fonts). I’ve posted to SteamSHIFT’s blog in hopes he’ll have some clue as to how to fix this… […]

New version:

or giving me a hint how to do it?

Hello! I was wondering whether I can have more than 30 categories in my cloud. I’ve tried changing the default, but even though I’ve pressed ’save changes’, it keeps going back to 30 and the extra ones don’t show up on my blog. Much thanks!
