It’s funny how the simplest idea can (in combination with some other stuff) make for some great visuals … it’s a VU meter, and it’s made of shipping containers!

I’d be keen to chat about this sometime. There’s an article (quite old now) by Alan Sekula about containers - before the recent surge of interest amongst architects and artists (such as ‘the container project’). He links the traditions of minimalist sculpture to the container as a unit of capitalism. I am just mentioning this to emphasise the politics. For instance, although architects are making clever cheap housing out of these, in many parts of the world people have already been living in these out of necessity at sites of precarious labour.

would be interested to read the Sekula article, what’s it called? I think that part of what intrigues me about containers is that they are embued with a whole language that could be brought to bear.

i can’t remember the precise detail but it’s a section of a book called ‘fish story’ from mid 1990s I think.
